Online, on-demand CS coursework
Definition
Online, on-demand CS coursework is computing instruction learners access online and work through on their own schedule.
Explanation
In our Learning @ Scale study, we examined coursework that undergraduates used to supplement their degree programs. We surveyed 51 students enrolled in or interested in computer science and interviewed four of them.
Participants described looking for interview preparation and skills for their resumes. They also described reasons for stopping, including the end of trial access and using LLMs instead.
Those accounts connect this work with my later questions about AI help-seeking. They do not establish that replacing a course with a chatbot is the same behavior as accepting a flawed proof.
Scope and evidence
This is a description of a mode of coursework, not a construct introduced by the study. The findings are participants’ reports from the studied sample.
