Sam Gilson

Teaching

When I teach, I try to make the reasoning visible. Before we choose a formula or a rule, I want us to identify what the problem asks and why that method applies. When an answer goes wrong, we can often learn something useful by finding the first step that no longer matches the problem.

That approach also shapes my AI literacy instruction. I ask students to examine a chatbot’s reasoning, test examples, and explain the solution themselves. The course materials include the assignments and procedures used in an ongoing discrete mathematics study.

Teaching award

I received Central Carolina Community College’s Excellence in Teaching Award for STEM in 2026 for my teaching in CSC 151 during Spring 2026.

Best teacher I've ever had. He explains things in way's that just make things make sense. I've never been able to do such complicated thing quicker, and it's 100% because of his teaching. I went into this class not knowing a thing about java, and now I've coded an entire game. Mr.Gilson is a one of kind GOAT

A student nomination

The award process began with student nominations, followed by confirmation from supervisors or colleagues. The rubric considered active learning, students’ recognition of growth, support outside the classroom, and service, alongside course evaluations.
