Collaborative prompting

Definition

Collaborative prompting is a teaching routine for working through a problem with a chatbot while keeping responsibility for checking and explaining the reasoning.

Explanation

The student states the task, asks for one step at a time, and examines the justification before moving on. Asking the chatbot to withhold the final answer can make room for that work, but the learning still depends on what the student does with the exchange.

LabelPurposeAction
C1Frame the problem and set the rulesState the problem and the kind of help you want. Ask the chatbot to withhold the final answer while you work through the reasoning.
C2Elicit one step with its rule namedAsk for one next step and the rule that supports it.
C3Interrogate the claimCheck the step. Ask for a justification or explain a correction when it does not follow.
C4Verify against hand-computed casesCompare with cases you computed yourself. Use counterexamples to reject claims and check the general argument before accepting it.
C5Consolidate in your own wordsWrite your own explanation of the solution and check that you can justify its steps.
C6Question the systemConsider who built the system, what is known about its data and limitations, and what evidence supports relying on it for this task.

The final step widens the question from “is this answer right?” to “what do I know about this system, and why am I relying on it here?”

Scope and evidence

Procedure C is described in the classroom-study materials and guest lecture. The ongoing study does not yet establish that the routine improves learning or reduces GenAI dependence.
