Ravnica Digest

Game

Ravnica Digest is a deck-building adventure in the style of Hand of Fate, set on the city-world of Ravnica from Magic: The Gathering's Return to Ravnica block, and it runs in a desktop browser. The map is a grid of tiles drawn in 3D, laid out in five-by-five chunks that open as you walk to their edges. Each tile holds a few cards from its terrain or its guild's district, and stepping onto one turns a card up: a creature to fight, a story to choose your way through, or a land to claim and set down on the map.

Every fight is a game of Magic, played by its rules against a computer opponent: priority, the stack, targets, attacks and blocks are yours to choose. The decks are small and lands never sit in them. Instead each side has a land pile, the lands placed within reach of the fight, made up to five with basics, and plays one a turn, so a game is not lost to drawing too few lands or too many. The cards are all of Return to Ravnica, 254 of them, each with its rules, its own story on the map, a picture drawn in TikZ after its art, and a 3D model for every creature on the table.

You start in one of the five guilds of the set, Azorius, Izzet, Rakdos, Golgari or Selesnya, with one of six starting decks: the guild's own and five rebuilt from the set's cards after decks Wizards of the Coast sold for it. Five cities hold an armourer, a card merchant, an inn, a trainer and a guild hall with quests. Creatures get stronger in rings out from where you start. A new game is one of two missions. In the Dracogenius you take a writ from New Prahv to Nivix and face Niv-Mizzet with a forty-card deck. In the Riot, Rakdos marches from Rix Maadi to New Prahv, razing each tile he walks onto and leaving one of his minions to hold it, and you are graded on how few steps it takes you to beat him. Each quest's next place shows on the map as a grey tile before you find it.

It is a Builder project: a Rust core holds every rule in integer maths, a WebAssembly shim passes values to the page, and the page only draws what the core returns.
